Mashabei Sade to Mitze Ramon -- 55 km (Marc 10 km)

I woke up feeling nauseous and could only eat a bit of breakfast. Zieva had left Jerusalem at 5:30 AM and got to Mashabei Sade at 8:00. She accompanied the riders for the final day. Here she is with Asher Rahamim, the ICTP Coordinator of Services for the Ethiopian Community who did the 1-day ride.

About 60 new riders joined us for the final day's ride, including 25 riders from ECI who were recruited by our friend Renee Chemel. We started riding sometime after 9:00 AM.

I wasn't feeling well, but hoped that the riding would help me get better. After about 10 km, I felt shaky on my bike, was nauseous and was shivering even though the temperature was over 80 degrees. We had an ambulance on this portion of the trip and the medics took my BP, pulse and temperature. All were normal, but I was still shivering and miserable. I lay down in the ambulance under a blanket and stayed there the rest of the day while the riders followed the route of the old Spice Road past the ancient city of Avdat

which is near Sde Boker, where David BenGurion lived and is burried.

I drank as much Gatorade as I could, and by the time we reached Mitzpe Ramon I had stopped shivering and was able to eat a little and join in at the closing celebration. Here I am (in my yellow jersey) with all the riders in the picture on the left and with Aura Wolfa in the picture on the right.

The ICTP staff was well represented

We took a bus back to Jerusalem and arrived about 9:00 PM. Zieva and I went to Cafe Joe coffee shop across from the hotel for a late dinner and I was finally able to eat -- two bowls of vegetable soup. I think my problem may have been too little salt caused by the desert heat and the diluted Gatorade I drank on the second day. In any case salty vegetable soup seems to have been a magic cure all. I had another bowl for lunch the next day as well served by Lenny Grodsky, one of my fellow 3-day riders.
